The natural sight at the height more than 3000 meters above sea level in the southern part of the ridge of Minshan is located. This area is famous for richness of a forest ecosystem, snow tops, falls and hot springs, however the main pride of the reserve – the travertinovy terraces formed of a calcareous tufa with mixed lakes which decorate the valley of the Huanglong of the same name.

The local picturesque landscape from height of neighboring mountains justifies the name of the reserve, the Yellow dragon as from height of neighboring mountains the valley really reminds a huge mythical animal with sparkling to the sun golden scales moving between mountain peaks and the wood. There is a legend narrating about a huge dragon who flew by over Huanglong and has dumped the bright attire here. The sizes of a being were so impressive that his scales have formed in these regions a long slope of gold cascades.

In the summer and in the spring nearby glades become covered by colourful carpets of white, red, violet and purple colors, and with arrival of fall when foliage on trees turns yellow, landscapes become especially charming. In the winter all Huanglong Square is shrouded by snow-white hoarfrost, and only the unruffled surface of turquoise lakes flickers among the ice kingdom. Concentration of the most picturesque objects is in Huanglonggou's gorge.

The bizzare shapes of a local relief put by limestones – result of thousand-year processes. Throughout a long time water flew down from mountain glaciers and was absorbed to the soil. As a result under limestone layers at a small depth the underground streams which are slowly dissolving the calcium carbonate which is contained in breed in a large number were formed. Making the way on a surface, the water saturated with minerals, got under influence of a difference of temperatures and pressure because of what there was a crystallization of the calcite dissolved in her which then accumulated on various surfaces. So during the millennia the mother nature has created the tremendous travertinovy landscapes depending on a relief getting a form of a terrace, a threshold or a reservoir.

Set of emerald pools, the cascade going down the valley, lie at the height of 3400 meters. They consist of eight groups of reservoirs, each of which is unique and unique. Total of pools in the territory of the reserve - about 3500. Lakes have the most various forms – one remind willow leaves, others – a water-lily. The smallest reservoirs by the sizes are comparable with a saucer, and the largest – with quite big pool. Other caves in the valley of the Huanglong are presented by the long calcareous shallow water called gold beaches – extensive layers of active limestone are covered by a thin layer of constantly current water.

Wide range of flowers (yellow, green, blue and orange) is caused by existence of seaweed and bacteria in pools.

Travertinovy terraces – very fragile educations which even the careless step of the person can destroy. For this reason for preservation of unique caves and for convenience of tourists in the territory of the reserve bridges and arbors are built. Average temperature in the field of Huanglong equals 7 °C all the year round. During the period from May to August in the morning fog, and in the evening - a rain is observed here.
