The Moletsky observatory has been open on the two hundred-meter hill in 1969. In the 1890th years to Abastumani there has arrived the grand duke Georgy Aleksandrovich, and with him and the prominent St. Petersburg astronomer Sergey Glazenap who has brought with himself the small telescope for private use. It was found out that local air possesses special characteristics, and observations of celestial bodies are much simpler and more effective. Several decades later it has been decided to construct in the Caucasus observatory.

The Abastumansky observatory occupies quite extensive territory. There are several residential buildings for employees, the big park, cafe. Also there is a ropeway. Excursions are both day, and evening, and night. It is the simplest to reach from Akhaltsikhe here.
